Though you won’t catch us on the cobblestone streets of Ankh-Morpork late at night, the old adage that Terry Pratchett popularized still rings true: It’s expensive to be poor. Cheap goods, while initially appealing, are often just that—cheap. You’re not saving money buying, say, $10 boots if you have to replace them every year.

That’s where Wirecutter and the Deals team come in: Our expert writers rigorously test products to confirm that they are worth your hard-earned money, while the Deals team finds the best savings on Wirecutter’s top picks. This week, we’ve found eight deals that will help you stay under budget and won’t leave you with a lump of trash in a month.

Squatty Potty Stockholm Folding Bamboo Stool Deal price: $39; street price: $45

What we like: Folds flat for storage. Nicest-looking of the four folding toilet-stool options we tested. Sturdy once set up, and made of sustainable bamboo.

Other things to know: Almost too sturdy, making it difficult to fold down flat. Crevices for grip often collect dust, dirt, and grime. A little on the expensive side at full price.

LectroFan EVO White Noise Machine Deal price: $36; street price: $46

What we like: Masks noises more effectively than any other white noise machine we tested. Easy to use, has a wide volume range, and comes in a compact, nightstand-friendly style.

Other things to know: Not the lowest price we’ve seen. Lacks a built-in battery and labels on the noise dials. Lets you set time only by the hour, not by the minute. Electronic-based noises aren’t as natural. Available only in black or white.

RAVPower 30W Dual Port PD USB-C Charger (RP-PC144) Deal price: $12 with code DNLC14; street price: $31

What we like: One of the smallest dual-port USB-A and USB-C chargers we tested. Provides both a 10-watt USB-A port and a 20-watt USB-C port, and includes a 3-foot Lightning–to–USB-C cable. Comes with an 18-month RAVPower warranty.

Other things to know: Minor variant of our dual-port pick. Slightly bigger than Apple’s 12 W power adapter. Use code DNLC14 to get the deal.

Wacom One Drawing Tablet (Small) Deal price: $40; street price: $50

What we like: Wacom’s cheapest entry-level option. Reliable and portable graphics tablet with a 6-by-3.7-inch drawing surface. Paper-like texture helps ease artists’ transition from analog to digital.

Other things to know: Lacks customizable buttons. Had slightly better pricing on Prime Day.

Ozeri Pronto Digital Multifunction Kitchen and Food Scale Deal price: $8; street price: $10

What we like: Weighs in 1-gram or 0.05-ounce increments. Accurate at heavier weights. Takes up less space than our top pick and is far more durable than it looks. Runs on regular AAA batteries. Elevated weighing platform.

Other things to know: Slightly slower to read than other picks, and fairly slow on very small weights. Automatic shut-off is shorter than on other scales. Screen is not backlit. Covered by a one-year warranty. Only the lime green color is on sale.

Kingston Canvas Go Plus microSD Card (128 GB) Deal price: $20; street price: $23

No longer available at the deal price.

What we like: Consistently fast (write speeds at 150 MB/s, read speeds at 160 MB/s, speed certified for U3, V30, and A2). Reasonably priced. Good for phones, tablets, and handheld game consoles. Comes with a lifetime warranty.

Other things to know: Not the lowest price we’ve seen. Not officially recognized by GoPro, though it works faster than some of the officially recommended cards. Sometimes affected by counterfeit-card issues, as all microSD cards are.

Mira Cascade Water Bottle (17 ounces) Deal price: $12; street price: $14

No longer available at the deal price.

What we like: Double-walled insulated bottle made of stainless steel, with a minimalist tapered design. Satisfying to drink from, and the deep-threaded lid keeps the opening clear of debris. Less expensive than models from other, well-known brands but just as effective.

Other things to know: Not dishwasher safe. Narrow opening is good for drinking but difficult for inserting ice cubes. Available on sale only in black or pearl blue.

RAVPower 10000mAh Power Bank (RP-PB186) Deal price: $14 with code DNL186; street price: $35

No longer available at the deal price.

What we like: Viable alternative to our top pick when discounted. Offers a 10,000 mAh capacity. Measures 4.4 by 2 by 1 inches and weighs less than 6.7 ounces. Has one USB-C PD port capable of charging a smartphone at top speed and one USB-A output port.

Other things to know: Rough ridges at the seams make it less comfortable to hold. Use code DNL186 (deal price includes shipping).
