Vandalism and misuse of park equipment have a metro mayor fed up and asking for help.
The park was funded and built by folks in the community and now he says parts of it are in danger of having to be closed.
“We've had a grown man jump up and grab the lasso and pull it all the way to the ground. The tail on the cow has been ripped off recently,” Mayor Kurt Mayabb said.
The City of Piedmont said it's planning to turn the faucet off on the splash pad and close the bathrooms unless something changes. Since first making the announcement, people are already coming forward to help.
“I think the park itself is a testament to the community and the fact that people pulled together and care about our community,” Joshua Campbell said.
Families said they've always seen the park spotless, but Mayor Kurt Mayabb said that's because he's usually the one cleaning it. He said most of the issues are in the bathrooms creating a health concern.
“You've got kids that are just leaving underwear and feces on the floor, taking the whole roll of toilet paper and putting it in the stool. Where does it stop,” Mayabb said.
Mayabb said it's up to the short-staffed parks and recreation board to keep the park clean and they're overworked.
“We used to be a community that would work together and everybody would be here,” Mayabb said.
“I'm begging for people to be helping us.”
Mayabb said the city needs consistent volunteers to keep Piedmont Park fully open.
“My family benefits from this, so we would love to see it open, and we'll do what we can to support,” Campbell said.
The mayor said if they do decide to close the splash pad and restrooms it would only be temporary until they get a list of volunteers.
